Every family has its own family tree, where we can track generations over the years. Some of us hope to find a rogue or a millionaire among our ancestors. Most of us are disappointed in that quest; instead we find ourselves drawn into the small-scale everyday lives of people long gone, people like us, yet whose lives could be quite unlike our own.
